Lamanai and the New River Safari by Air

After a 20 minute flight over picturesque vistas of northern Belize’s reef, coastline and lowlands, you will start one of the most interesting tours in the Orange Walk District of Belize.  A short drive from the Tower Hill Airstrip landing brings you to Lamanai Landings, where you board a riverboat and head up the New River.  While traversing the many little creeks and lagoons, it is easy to encounter hawks, kites and falcons. Dainty jacanas (also known as Jesus birds or lily trotters) lightly walk on the lily pads while the crocodiles bask in the morning sunlight.

At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai (Maya for Submerged Crocodile) rise into view.  Wile touring this site, huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest, amid the chatter of bird life and the haunting call of the howler monkeys.  Your guide will point out the Copal and Ramon trees, which were of great importance in ancient times.

Return to Lamanai Landings and select your lunch from a range of buffet items at the Smoky Mermaid II, situated on the banks of the New River. After lunch you return to Tower Hill Airstrip and board your return flight to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
